1. Description. Much as flickr.com allows people to attach keyword labels or (xml metadata) tags to each JPG photo, my idea is to allow UNIQNAMES to add tags to their personal datafields (Bind/Unbind). Then others can use the (approved list of metadata) search terms to discover others all around the UM community and wider 48l0* zipcodes who share similarly (self) identified interest areas. For example, a boolian search with 'japan' and 'photography' would return all uniqnames/persons who have given themselves such labels. In contrast to self-identified persons who subscribe to each Center's email list for announcements and opportunities; or in contrast to UM SIG email groups, this SIG-Tag project would make data follow the person, rather than make the person seek out the data/email group.

2. Intended function. This SIG-Tag would bring together people with mutual or prospectively shared interests from across disciplines, bailliwicks, and other institutional cubicles. Instead of a chance meeting or serendipitous introduction, by harnessing the IT tools, the wealth of scholarly synapsis will develop most rapidly. Collaboration, Web 2.0 active manipulation of available resources, and interdisciplinarity are the catch words of this generation and the next, so let's lead the way!

3. Pros and Cons (cost v. benefit). Benefits are to facilitate networking of a beneign kind. The same system could be abused, of course, so that a person could seek our targeted enemies to harass or worse who share controversial interests. Similarly a person could pose as holding a particular interest to attract others to her or himself for diabolical or nefarious purpose... Etc, etc.
