On July 16 the Diane Rehm Show (WAMU) featured Alan Alda who has long advocated and advanced the communication skills and motivations of scientists for the purpose of engaging the general public - mainly natural sciences, but the same issue of engaging others outside of one's small circle of specialization speaks directly and forcefully of the need for more ambitious and vigorous efforts at home (campus; off campus) and abroad by experts in other fields, including Social Sciences and Area Studies (foreign languages and societies).
