Everyone around you is talking about deliverables, assumptions, critical paths, constraints, dependencies and milestones. There is a hierarchy. Demands are coming at you from all directions. Budgets are tight and getting tighter. Those around you in IT are talented, dedicated, and often brilliant.
Each term is shorthand for a larger meaning; but now consider exactly what is meant by:
deliverables -the product or service that results; something that was not there before
assumptions -guiding principles about time scale, available resources/infrastructure/capacity to leverage
critical paths -particular sequences, bottlenecks, talent/expertise, timing necessary to complete the work
constraints -boundaries of money, time, talent to work within
dependencies - co-occurring conditions necessary to proceed, some of which are controllable, others not
milestones -punctuated reference points to confirm that navigation of the project is on course, on time, on budget
