True not only for natural science but indeed all scholarly writings: make it compact and easy to understand by 8th graders (age 13 or 14):
Opinion essay from InsideHigherEd.com on Aug. 2 that suggests how the research funders should require easy-to-understand summaries of the project. Then everybody can understand the goals, method and results.
