"social marketing" (cf. social investment funds)

from NPR.org Morning Edition for Dec. 15, 2008 re: trying to motivate new behavior among individuals:

1. Persuade by compelling facts; peer comparison
2. but also feed people's hunger to feel good about the action
3. also feed people's satisfaction in feeling part of a compelling story(line)
4. also repeat regularly [cf. the mechanism for reproducing Nation-State awareness]
5. people want to feel smart; smarter than the rest of their peers for doing the action

Now apply these principles to motivating people to explore other languages and societies, and thereby to see their own with new eyes, too.
